Quilting With Grandmother

In my previous post about Grandparents’ Day, I suggested one way to commemorate was recalling your quilting occasions with Grandmother…if you quilted with her.  So I should do this myself.
My maternal grandmother, Nanny, taught me the first rudiments about sewing and quilting when I was 6-8 years old.  Our first sewing sessions together consisted of […]

If You’re a Fabric Fanatic, You Can Make Quilted Tote Bags

A love of fabric, whether a particular type or simply fabric in general, can lead to an interesting business or sideline.  Most quilters, fabric artists, or accessory designers share a love of fabric and need to justify the urge constantly to add to their “stash.”
Laurie Maier, a collector of vintage fabrics, found that […]

Turtle Quilts Inspired by Turtle Blog

Jennifer, in a comment on my fun post about baby turtles, Something Fun for Quilters, mentioned that her best friend likes and collects turtles.  In the post, I’d suggested the turtles might inspire quilters.  So Jennifer came up with the idea of a baby blanket or quilt with turtles for her friend’s baby.
I agree with Jennifer.  […]

A Patchwork Bridal Tea for a Quilter…or Any Bride

What a marvelous idea Noreen Crone-Findlay had to begin the festivities for her daughter Chloe…a bridal tea.  Noreen blogs at Hankering for Yarn and Chloe at Tangled Thread.
Since I enjoy tea myself and often write about it in “one of my other lives” as a newspaper columnist of the Country Kitchen column, I thought the […]

Quilting in a Japanese Prison

As I listened to the song, Time Flies, by Cathy Miller, who sings many songs about quilts and quilting, I thought, “I’ve got to learn more about those quilts in her song!”  But then my schedule became hectic, and I forgot about it.
Yesterday, I read John Flynn’s blog post, New Piece of Quilt History, and thought, “The […]

Discovering a Wooden Quilt Kimono

As I was browsing around various blogs containing quilting references, I discovered Jafabrit’s Art and her spectacular Wooden Quilt Kimono.  A coat of many colors!
I haven’t learned yet just how Jafabrit has constructed it.  However, I clicked on the photo and got a close up showing the stitching between the pieces.  This reminded me somewhat of crazy quilt construction.

Quilt Pattern for 22 Lollipops Quilt & More

As I browsed around Jen’s so you wannabee a Domestik Goddess? blog I discovered a number of free quilt patterns.
Anna Maria Horner’s inner gypsy had to have been at play when she designed her 22 Lollipops Quilt and Bohemium Quilt - and the fabric collections that inspired them, too, mentions Jen.
The fabrics in the quilts shown […]

Sun Dyeing and Painting Fabric for Quilts

My daughter had an enjoyable day today painting and sun dyeing fabric for her quilting and fabric art.  Beth started with fabric she’d previously dyed.  Today she incorporated items from nature, ferns and leaves, for the designs on the fabrics below as she used sun dyeing and painting techniques.  She said she eventually may do some stamping […]
