Mary Emma’s Quilt Memories - Finding Nanny’s Quilt
(I often encourage quilters to write their quilting memories, in a journal, in a scrapbook, in a blog, in a quilt log. Although I’ve written quilting memories, I’ve never set them down in any detail. If I start a journal here, I can share them with my readers, too.)
I was thrilled when I discovered my mother had saved the quilt that once covered my bed when I was a child and teenager. I thought it was too worn to save and didn’t consider it worth taking with me when I married and left home.
However, when I had to clean the old farmhouse where I grew up (prior to selling it after Mother developed Alzheimer’s), I found my quilt. Mother had folded it and placed it on a shelf in a closet. There it had remained for many years.
I described this quilt, of 4-Patch design, in my Quilt Patch of the Week.
How pleased I am now that for some reason Mother saved it.
How about sharing your memories and preserving them for your quilting heritage?

My grandfather has made a quilt for each of us 10 grandchildren. He does the embroidery for blocks and then has someone else help quilt and piece. I will always treasure my quilt and have a wonderful story about the man who made it.

i remember this twin-sized, white quilt covered with big butterflies that i just loved as a kid. now, i’m going to have to see if it’s still “alive”! i make quilts myself now, but give them all away (usually small for babies, but have managed a few big ones too). I think it’s high time I got serious and made a nice one for us. :)

My grandmother made my husband and I a nine-patch for our wedding. I often have it on our bed. My mom once asked why I use it so often, and I told her I would rather see I everyday and use it because it reminds me of my grandmother daily –of her love for me. Better than keeping it stored away for a rainy day I may never see.

I am not (yet) a quilter, but my mother is. She made a beautiful baby quilt for my little daughter, and I have been avoiding using it to keep it nice. But now I’ve decided that she needs to use it and make it worn out–that’s what it was intended to do.

My mother quilts when she has time and I remember a “yo-yo” quilt she slaved over for at least a year when I was in high school. What an accomplishment when she finally finished it before I went off to college! Thanks!

My mother in law took scraps from all the dresses I’ve made my daughter and incorporated them into a quilt - it is wonderful to see bits and pieces and then remember the dress that was from that fabric…

My grandmother was a home economics teacher and instilled in me a love for sewing. I made my first quilt with her when I was 14 years old. Today I am still making quilts. I can’t wait to pass the tradition on to my children.

Gamma started a quilt, ma found it, and I am going to finish it.
Grandma died of Alzheimer’s.
Ma died of Cancer.
I am going to finish the legacy.
I bought an old quilting frame of wood. Over 9 feet across.
I bought an embroidery machine to write down our names and story around the edge.
I bought 100% cotton batting and backing to preserve the intent my grandma had while she was making the top.
Love handed down thru the ages.

This is so much fun! Not only have I gotten the chance to read some really great blogs, but I also have a chance to win something, too!! I wish I knew how to quilt, I think it would be fantastic. Unfortunately, I can barely thread a needle :( Neither my mom or grandma sewed and I just don’t know anyone who does. My MIL was teaching me how to cross stitch, loved it, but she passed away just as I was learning…so I guess I’ll just stick to reading the blogs!

I would love to learn quilting. My mom on the other hand fixed my husbands beat up velvet quilt. He thought I threw it out since the bag and the quilt vanished one year. I gave it to my mom and she re did the whole thing for him and gave it to him on chrismas. That quilt is the warmest blanket I have ever seen and of course I love the colors as well. It was one he had when he was younger.

Thank you for the reminder. I really need to do that — I made two (one for each child) memory quilts and I really need to write down the story behind each block. I took their clothes and cut them up for the blocks and sewed their hats, swim suits … to the quilt so it has sooo many memories that I wil forget with time.
Thanks for the reminder to write it down.

I love quilts. Love to make them, love to look at them, love to cuddle under them. I have a fabric stash that is already too big and yet it still grows. But the old sentimental quilts are the best. I still have my baby quilt, my Mom saved it and gave it to me when I was pregnant with my first. Talk about a warm fluff feeling inside, seeing that quilt brought happy tears to my eyes.

I have a quilt in my closet that I can’t wait to pull out again. My grandmother gave it to me a few years ago. I forget where she got it, but I know she didn’t make it. The important thing is that she gave it to me and for some reason, now that she’s passed away, it’s one of my favorite things I own.

My grandmother saved scraps from favorite articles of clothing and made a “memories” quilt with them. It was neat to look at that quilt and be flooded with warm memories of me wearing that favorite dress to grade school, or Mom wearing that apron as she made homemade biscuits… a great tradition that needs to be brought back.
