Quilting and Patchwork

Quilting is Good for Your Mental Health

Many quilters and fabric artists find these activities are good for their mental health and alleviating depression. Perhaps you’re going through a stressful time in your life. Why not concentrate on your creative quilting activities?

In addition to giving you something to concentrate on when your thoughts could delve into darkness, quilting and it’s related arts may bring you together with others in your field. This helps you find new directions and boost your spirits.

I’ve discovered working with my hands a great diversion over the years. The actual task of quilting is relaxing. Sketching new designs you can do while you wait in doctors’ offices.

My daughter began her serious venture into quiltmaking when her husband was very ill. The small hand projects were easy to tote along to hospitals and waiting rooms.

If you can begin to earn income to help with the family budget during times of budget crunches, this also helps alleviate the stress of life.

How has quiltmaking and fabric art helped you through tough times?

I absolutely agree that quilting is good for your mental health. It’s also good for you physically - I read somewhere that your blood pressure drops when you’re quilting.
I find myself looking forward to quilting when things are stressful at work (or home!). It gives me a place to hide and work. The time passes so fast when I’m quilting - I guess that’s why they call it a “passtime.”

Thanks for visiting Quilting and Patchwork, Jean, and for your input. I hadn’t heard that information about your blood pressure dropping when you’re quilting. But I can believe it.
