Restoring Old Quilts - Saving a Piece of History & Family Memories

by Mary Emma Allen on November 6th, 2007

The desire to save old quilts, whether those in our family, something found at a yard sale, or ones rescued from the dump, runs strong in quilters and anyone involved in our quilting heritage.  Family quilts take on new meaning when we can salvage at least something made by grandmother, great grandmother, aunts, cousins and other relatives.

Gina/Thimbelina has a fascinating story at Gina-Dear Gina about restoring an old quilt with Dresden Plate design.  She has done a fabulous job!

I’ll give you two of her posts that lets you in on the process complete with photos:

Dresden Restoration Completed

After seeing what Gina has done, I have hopes for the old quilt that was a wedding gift to my mom and dad in 1934.  It consists only of pieces now and some of the fabrics are tattered and worn.  However, I should start on this piece meal and see what can be done.  I wish I knew who made it for my parents.  Mother must have mentioned it long ago when I would admire it on the guest room bed.  Perhaps it will surface from my memory one of these days.

Thank you, Gina, for stopping by and encouraging me with this project. It’s been difficult to date or find any matching fabrics. My daughter and I will keep trying.
