Discovering “Inchies” in the Quilting World

“Inchies” and “Plus Size Inchies” have become one of my daughter Beth’s latest fabric art projects.  These are 1-inch or 1 1/4-inch squares that you embellish.
Beth has been using some of her dyed fabric and embellishing with stitching, beads, fabric and other items.  You can give your imagination free reign and create very interesting tiny […]

Painting & Dyeing Fabric for Quilting Projects

Over at Layers Upon Layers, Cyndi calls our attention to painting and dyeing fabrics for quilting and other fabric art projects.  Actually her painting involves sun pringing  muslin after painting it.  She refers to Melissa’s blog and her great fabric dyeing techniques and displays.
My daughter enjoys painting and dyeing fabrics and creating all types of […]

Commemorating Memorial Day in our Quilting World

Although Beth and I haven’t made anything specific for Memorial Day this year in our quilting and fabric arts world, we are commemorating by flying “Uncle Al’s Flag” from our deck railing.
This is a large flag given to our family when my Uncle Al died.  He was a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific […]

Getting to Know Fabric Artist/Quilter Angie Platten

I thoroughly enjoyed Cyndi’s interview of Angie Platten at Layers Upon Layers.  Angie, a multi-faceted artist, does lovely work.
Cyndi has a number of photos of some Angie’s various types of work….journal quilts, fabric postcards, altered books, handmade books, ATC’s, altered CD’s, and fiber art.  I particularly like the journal quilt Cyndi shows on her blog.
(To […]

Creating a Padfolio for a Quilter’s Skeching or Note Pad

My daughter Beth continually introduces me to new projects and the latest is making a padfolio, following Sue Bleiweiss’s tutorial.  A padfolio is basically a quilted fabric folder made to hold a pad of paper for note taking, along with possibly a pen or pencil and other items.
If you like, you can use a small […]

Considerations When Having Someone Do Your Quilting

Many quilters enjoy designing and creating the quilt top, but would rather have someone else do the quilting.  When I operated a quilting business from my home, rather than simply doing fabric art for my own enjoyment, I hand quilted several old quilts.  (Machine quilting was just coming into vogue.)
Nowadays, many quilters have taken up machine […]

Promoting Your Quilting & Fabric Art with Virtual Blog Tours

“What’s a blog tour like?” I’m often asked, when I write about them, interview tour coordinators like Dorothy Thompson, or host authors on my blog.
Today, I’m hosting author Pamela S. Thibodeaux at my Potpourri of Writing blog.  Although she’s not a quilt writer, taking a look at her interview will give you an idea of the usual […]

Business Cards for Quilters & Fabric Artists

Most quilters and fabric artists realize they need business cards…at least something that lets others know what they do.  This is particularly important if they operate their quilting and fabric art interests as a business.
Many quilters often are at a quandry what design to choose for business cards.  There are many options, depending on your type […]

What Would You Think of a $75,000 Quilt?

William Lehman, at Artist Hideout, called my attention to his post about renowned quilter Nancy Crow.  He had discovered a story about her in his local news which told how her rather accidentally become involved in quiltmaking when she discovered she couldn’t realize her dream of becoming a potter.  She was allergic to clay dust.
So Nancy turned […]

Unique Yo-Yo Quilting Templates

Chloe, at Tangled Thread, has found a unique yo-yo maker.  She says that Clover is creating various shaped templates for making yo-yo’s and has them available for quilters.  These include flowers and hearts.
Yo-yo’s are those fascinating shirred circles, which quilters now are creating in a variety of shapes.    You can use yo-yo’s for quilts, tablecloths, […]
