Paper & Fabric Books - Inspirations for Quilters
As I helped youngsters in grades 3-5 create books today, I was inspired with ideas for paper and fabric books to try with my grandchildren at home. This bookmaking at the school where I was substitute teaching was inspired by a visiting artist who shared many of her works and demonstrated her techniques.
These students made their books by covering cardboard with colorful papers and textured papers. They used colored paper for the pages. On these, following the theme of earth and space, they created interesting pictures and patterns with paper they had designed the previous day. Then they added embellishments to further enhance their illustrations.
Using “found materials” from nature, scraps of textured and gilded paper, bits of fabric and three-dimensional objects, they became talented artists. On some of the pages, they wrote sentences about their topic, tying it in with the science they were learning in class.
I’ve begun assemblying the materials to work with my grandchildren next week to see what we can create. I can see a place here for using some of my quilting fabrics and embellishments.
Some of these books could involve memories, while others are simply a collection of a variety of materials. They also can be about a theme or topic. The artist teaching the students had created one that caught my eye revolving around the theme of the forest…various trees and leaves and wildlife.
