5 Tips for Fitting Quilting into a Busy Schedule

by Mary Emma Allen on February 18th, 2007

How often do we say, “When I have more time, I’m going to do some quiltmaking, try some fabric art, or experiment with mixed media.”  Then time fleets away and we find we don’t get to those exciting projects.

Somewhere along the line, we have to make this a priority and fit in a few minutes here and there…between family, housework, children’s activities, caring for parents, a job.

1. Find small projects that you can carry with you; do a project that is composed of segments.  I’ve discovered that fabric postcards are ideal for this.  My daughter carried quilt blocks with her when waiting for her husband undergoing medical tratment.  Quilting these helped keep her calm and relieve stress, yet kept her involved with her fabric art.

3. Get up an hour earlier than usual; stay up an hour later.  This is what writers often must do to finish a novel or complete a project.  It works for quilting and fabric art, too.  You don’t have to do it every day, but just enough so you find you’re getting a project going.

4.  Block off an afternoon that is just for you.  Tell your family you’re going to work on your quiltmaking and don’t want interruptions, including phone calls.  Even if this is just a couple of hours, you’ll come away feeling you’ve accomplished something.

Getting Organized: Learning How to Focus, Organize and Prioritize5.  Learn to say “no” to requests from others that you really don’t want to do.  Don’t feel you need to be the room mother at school who says “yes” every time you’re asked.  Learn to say “no” to tasks your children can accomplish by themselves, to organizations that want your help, to activities that don’t have to take a priority. When I Say No, I Feel Guilty
