Do You Have a Quilting Dream Book?

Do you have a scrapbook or sketchbook containing your quilting/fabric art dreams?  A place where you can look at them frequently and convince yourself, “I’m going to do that!”
*This can be a place where you paste pictures and photos of the quilts you’d like to make.
*It may contain brief sketches of ideas for future quilts.
*Jot […]

New Poll at Quilting & Patchwork

My new poll concerns the type of patterns you tend to use in your quiltmaking and fabric art.  It gives you an opportunity to think about the type of work you do.
My question: Do you [prefer sewing traditional quilting patterns over creating your own designs?
Answers:  Yes; No; I do both depending on the item I’m […]

Results of Current Quilting & Patchwork Poll

I’ve run a poll, for the past month, to see how my readers like to put their quilts together.  It’s always interesting to get the results of a poll.  This helps me to learn more about my readers and their interests.
The Question: Do you prefer to do hand quilting over maching quilting?
Answer choices were: Yes; No; […]

Finding Quilting “Treasure” at Second Hand Stores

My daughter and I browse through the second hand store in our little town for quilting “treasure.”  Sometimes we find clothing for the children, mittens for cold weather, an interesting dish or cup, cook books, and other odds and ends.
When we stop by, the owners remark, “You’re having a mother/daughter outing,” and laugh because we often make […]

Quilting Donations for Worthy Causes

Making quilts, lap or baby size, for worthy causes occupies many quilters, either singly or in groups.  Also school children often become involved in class projects that result in quilts for babies and youngsters in hospitals.  I’ve often helped the sixth graders in our school when they put their creations together.
Recently I read of a […]

Quilts & Quilting Items on Sale

Now is a good time of year for sales…either sales where you’re looking to purchase quilting supplies and quilted items or where you’re desiring to move the items you made which didn’t sell for Christmas.
As you visit brick-and-mortar stores or browse the online ones, you’ll see many fabrics and other supplies on sale.  Numerous e-newsletters I receive […]

Receiving Quilting Books for Christmas

My daughter was delighted when her family gave her Creative Quilting, the Journal Quilt Project book as a Christmas gift.  It was on her list, but she wasn’t sure she’d receive it. This book, edited by Karey Patterson Bresenhan, has been the result of the work of many quilters from around the world.
“Journal quilts are […]

Check Out the Quilting Postal Stamps

The US Postal Service issued ten postal stamps featuring quilts this year.  Pictures of the stamps of Gee’s Bend quilts, made from work by African-American quilters in Alabama, are stunning.  I’ve been using them, but have saved one set for my scrapbook.
If you’re fortunate to find these issued in 2001, you’ll have  four stamps of Amish […]

Quilting & Knitting Writing Interrelated

Developing a quilting business doesn’t differ too much, in general principles, from one involving knitting, crocheting, and other fiber arts.  Also, if a quilter wants to design and sell patterns or write books about them, the same basic practices are utilized.
I read an interview of knitter Margaret Radcliffe, author of The Knitting Answer Book,  and […]

Bird Watching for Quilters

What does bird watching have to do with quilting? you wonder.
*You can find relaxation as you watch birds at a feeder from your window, in your garden, or during walks.
*The birds around you may inspire your quilting designs.  The pioneer quiltmakers often named designs from the birds and animals in their lives.
*This is an enjoyable […]
