Do You Collect Old Quilts?

by Mary Emma Allen on November 7th, 2006

Old quilts have always fascinated me…those made by family members and others.  I don’t have a large collection, but enjoy the ones I’ve accumulated, whether given to me as gifts, hand-me-downs or purchased.

I only wish I had a place to display more of them.  Our multi-generational home (hubby, daughter, son-in-law, two grandchildren, dog and assorted other pets) doesn’t allow for much display space…only the wall where Daughter Beth puts up her projects-in-progress to gain perspective.

What fun to be able to display these collectibles and tell the stories associated with them at quilt shows and to quilting groups!

Along the line of historical quilts was an invitational exhibit at A Quilter’s Gathering, in Nashua, NH, Nov. 2-5.  Stephanie Hatch presented The Lure of the Antique Quilt, a collection of New England Quilts, Quilt Tops and Artifacts from the 1800’s.

Stephanie began collecting and researching antique quilts about 30 years ago and now teaches and lectures about the history of these quilts and fabrics,   Her collection includes many acquired as gifts from family and friends.

Why not start your quilt collection, whether antique, family related, or simply ones you like?  They also might include quilts you’ve made but can’t part with.

I don’t collect old quilts, but I do collect old fabric to make my own. And then I find myself hoarding it LOL!!

Time to break into that stash :-)

Cindi, what fun to collect old fabrics, too. I have some of these…found at my Mom’s along with some quilt squares, some old feed sacks from yard sales, and scraps from my sewing as a youngsters in 4-H.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Mary Emma
I love old fabrics, but don’t own any vintage quilts….. but I always have a sense of ’story’, when I come upon old quilts.
I feel the same way about old buttons - what a treasure!
    blessings
