Quilting Stamps

When I purchased stamps at the post office today, I noticed some with pictures of quilts in the display on the counter.  Of course, those were the ones I bought.
They are part of the American Treasures stamp collection of art and consist of designs from The Quilts of Gee’s Bend.  They’re almost too pretty to use.
I […]

What is fiber art?

Most people have some idea about quiltmaking, whether it concerns creating bed coverings, wall hangings, pillows, clothing, table cloths, placemats and similar items from pieces of cloth stitched together and then finished with decorative stitching.  However, the term “fiber art” is one we’ve begun to hear about more recently.
Fiber art works primarily are created from […]

Round Robin Quilting & Fabric Art

Previously I mentioned the Round Robin my daughter’s local group was conducting. Occasionally Beth posted a photo of a Round Robin fiber art piece she was working on.  The artists are displaying the finished pieces as the Round Robin Collection at their exhibit at the Artistic Roots Art Center at Campton, NH.  Beth also has photos of these for […]

Discovering a Quilt Shop Hop

Attending My Daughter’s Quilt/Fiber Arts Exhibit

What fun to attend a Grand Opening and Reception for a Quilt/Fiber Arts Exhibit, especially when your daughter is one of the six fiber artists!  This was a culmination of Beth’s venturing into various types of quilting and experimenting with many fabrics and fibers.
Most of the projects at this exhibit, Texture-Textiles-Techniques, at the Artistic Roots Art […]

Quilts Evoking Schoolhouse Memories

When I see quilts made with the “Schoolhouse” pattern in its many variations, I think of my years attending school in a one-room schoolhouse or my mother’s career teaching in one.  In the book, Twentieth Century Quilts, 1900-1950  by Thomas K. Woodard and Blanche Greenstein, I viewed two of these “Schoolhouse” quilts, both in green […]

The Famous Sears Roebuck Quilt Contest

I first learned of the famous Sears, Roebuck Quilt Competition in Jennifer Chiaverini’s Elm Creek novels about quiltmakers.  Since then, I’ve come across references frequently.  Or perhaps since I know know about the contest, my attention is alerted.
This very popular contest in 1933 had a $1,000 prize with an additional $200 if the quilt had […]
