Quilts Evoking Schoolhouse Memories
When I see quilts made with the “Schoolhouse” pattern in its many variations, I think of my years attending school in a one-room schoolhouse or my mother’s career teaching in one. In the book, Twentieth Century Quilts, 1900-1950 by Thomas K. Woodard and Blanche Greenstein, I viewed two of these “Schoolhouse” quilts, both in green and red and beige.
However, even though the quilters used basically the same colors and same schoolhouse pattern, they were very different. In one, the schoolhouses were red and the other green. The backgrounds were beige or off-white. However one had much more of this background color than the other. The arrangement of the buildings on the background was much different, too.
The schoolhouse I attended was white, as was the one where Mother first taught. I went to school here for the first four years of schooling. Mother had fond memories of her days as a teacher in three of these one-room schools.
Do you have memories that come to mind when you view this particular pattern?
