What’s Your Quilting Story?

by Mary Emma Allen on September 18th, 2006

Quilters, from early days, have had stories to tell.  They may not have realized they were making history, contributing to women’s heritage, and leaving a legacy in fabric art.  Their stories fascinate their descendants and encourage women everywhere in the quilting world.

What’s your quilting story?  You must write it down for yourself and your family, for other quilters who might be inspired by what you’ve accomplished and what you have to relate.

Even if no one else in your family quilts or works in fabric art, nor have in the past that you know of, your story is important and should be written down in a journal, a scrapbook, an online blog (as my daughter has done at http://meanderingthreads.blogspot.com ).  You may start a tradition in your family and leave a legacy for others to follow.

I’ve found, as I’ve researched my family, that the quilters seem to be on my mother’s side.  I learned from her mother, she was given a wedding quilt from someone on that side, she accumulated unfinished quilt blocks when her mother died, and Mother encouraged me to continue my quilting.  Others in my mothers family made quilts, too.

My daughter has a quilting heritage on both sides of her family since her dad’s grandmother was a quilter and gave us a lovely quilt top as a wedding gift.  As Grandma became an invalid, she still could sit in her rocking chair and make quilts.

Take pictures of your quilts, write down your thoughts and inspirations, add original patterns….tell your Quilting Story.

Around the Quilt Frame (below) is a collection of quilters’ stories.  Perhaps these will inspire you.
