Quilt Business Variations
When we think of a quilt or fiber arts business, we usually think of creating products from fabric for sale. These can be made on commission or for speculation.
However, when I was writing the quilt business column for magazines, I discovered related or spin-off businesses quilters became involved in. Some of these didn’t even involve fabric but were items that quilters or those interested in quilts and fabric art would purchase.
Some of these included:
*Note cards and postcards…quilting designs printed on paper and card stock. These could be prints of photos of some of your work.
*Wood wall hangings made from pieces of wood cut into quilt pattern pieces and painted in different colors. These also could be made into wood puzzles.
*Various objects for the home painted with quilt designs.
*Three-dimension or shadow boxes with a patchwork background and quilting/sewing objects or memorabilia attached, such as needles, thimbles, a photo of a particular quilter. These could be general or personalized.
*Clothing made with patchwork and appliqued designs. For awhile I made children’s reversable quilted vests with appliqued designs on them.
*Teaching quilting classes/workshops.
*Writing about quilting, fabric art, etc.
By using your imagination and creativity, you’ll find a number of ways to incorporate quiltmaking into a business.
The book below, Make Money Quilting, is just one of the books out there that gives ideas on quiltmaking businesses.
