Quilting and Patchwork

The Fascination of Log Cabin Quilts

by Mary Emma Allen on August 25th, 2006

Log Cabin quilts have fascinated quilters for generations and have long been associated with American quiltmaking.  This pattern evolved during America’s pioneer days and with its many variations has never lost its popularity.

The pattern relates to the pioneer log cabin built of logs stacked upon logs and a welcoming light in the window designated by the center piece often of yellow or light fabric.  First made of scraps, alternating light and dark on each side of the block, it was thought to reflect pioneer life and the fabrics those quilters had available. Eventually this pattern was made of new fabrics, even the silks and satins of the traditional crazy quilt.

Then quilters, in their creativity, came up with many variations:  Log Cabin Pineapple, Straight Furrows, Chimneys and Cornerstones, Off-Center, Courthouse Steps, Barn Raising and the Traditional Spiraling.  Some more modern variations include: Curved Log Cabin, Hexigon Log Cabin, Pyramid Log Cabin, and Diamond Log Cabin.

One very interesting and informative book with patterns is Log Cabin Quilt by Bonnie Leman and Judy Martin.  It has color photos of the many designs with instructions on how to make many.  (It may be out of print, but a treasure if you can find a copy.)

Another of the many books on Log Cabin quilts is Creative Log Cabin Quilting.
