Have You Ever Made an “Ugly” Quilt?
My daughter introduced me to the “ugly” quilt concept, although the quilt she made from these fabrics was fascinating. This was a project one of her online quilting groups became involved in.
Each quilter who participated collected from their stash fabrics and adornments they considered ugly, ones they wouldn’t put into a quilt or fabric art piece. They bundled these up and sent them to the organizer who distributed the packages to each participant.
Then the challenge was to create something of a specific size using a designated number of the items. It’s interesting that what some quilters might consider ugly fabrics were just what another quilter thought ideal. This was a fun project for the quilters who posted their finished item on the group web site.
This type of project could be used in a number of ways….as a fund raiser, as an exchange, or with the participants voting anonymously on which they liked best after the finished items were posted.
You also could do this with a quilting group that’s not an online one. Also, select some of your fabrics and embellishments you consider ugly and see what you can create on your own.
