Quilting Books of Inspiration

I enjoy inspirational books of any type, but find those with a quilting theme particularly interesting.  Recently my daughter was going through some of her books related to quilting and patchwork….fiction, instructional, and inspirational.
Some of these Beth received as gifts from quilting friends to inspire her in her work and her life.  I like to read through […]

Creating a Quilter’s Blog

More and more quilters create personal blogs to share their quilts and quilting lives.  This becomes a way they can connet with quilters and fabric artists around the world.  They have different talents and interests, yet they have quiltmaking in common.
Some quilters also use blogs for promoting and selling their work.  Others simply place their quilting […]

Rail Fence Quilts - Ideal for Beginners

After I discovered the Rail Fence Quilt pattern, I enjoyed making it for many projects, including baby quilts and placemats.  Depending on the fabrics chosen and way they’re laid out, they can make a distinct zig zag pattern across the piece.  With the placemat, it’s not so distinct, but these were popular items nevertheless and fairly quick to put together.
I made […]

Grandmother’s Flower Garden - Inspired by Spring?

One of the most intricate quilt designs, Grandmother’s Flower Garden, has been around for many, many years.  It consists of numerous hexagons arranged in a series of flowers.  There is one hexagon in the center, another row of six circling around it, with still one more circle of twelve hexagons around that.
These are linked together with more […]

Quilting Classes Online

My daughter has found it very beneficial to take some quilting classes online.  We live in an area where there aren’t any quilting classes offered on a frequent basis.  Also, with a busy schedule of work and family, it’s difficult to find time to travel where classes might be offered.
Online classes you can take at […]

Family Round Robins

The Round Robin my daughter’s quilt group is conducting gave me the thought, why not have a family Round Robin?
This could take place in several ways….only the members of an immediate family or among family members of the extended family tree.  It might be something you’d share at a family gathering or reunion.  This […]

Round Robin Quilt Hanging Idea

My daughter described a Round Robinh quilt hanging project she and other quilters are undertaking.  It sounds fascinating.
Each quilter selects a piece of 12-inch fabric as a background.  Then she passes it to the next quilter on her list.  That person adds embellishments, other fabric, quilting, etc.
When she’s finished, it goes to another person to […]

Quilt Patterns Evoke Memories

In addition to fabrics that bring memories to mind, we also may find that particular patterns call to us recollections of yesteryear.  They may be ones we’ve made or stitched with a family member or were part of a favorite quilt or hanging.
These patterns also may bring to mind past events in our lives.  Whenever […]

Quilts Among the Amish

Some of the most popular and sought after quilts in our country consist of those designed and made by the Amish of Pennsylvania and the Mid-West.  Their bright, colorful patterns which reflect various aspects of their life make these quilts ones much in demand.
A book I added to my collection several years ago, Quilts among […]

Creating Art With Mixed Media

Fabric art and modern quilting often incorporate mixed media, something my daughter enjoys experimenting with and which I’m beginning to find intriguing.
“What’s mixed media?” you wonder.
This is a form of art quilt which utilizes more than fabric.  You might mix and match a variety of items, such as fabric, paper, felt, wood, paint and various embellishments.
Beth showed […]
