Discovering Old Quilt Blocks
What do you do with old quilt blocks you discover in a family trunk, purchase at a yard sale, find in a box of odds and ends you bid on at an auction? If you’re a quilter, you consider these a treasure to use in various ways.
When I cleaned out a closet, when selling the family home after my mom developed Alzheimer’s disease, I came across a number of hand stitched quilt blocks. There weren’t enough for a quilt, so how should I preserve them?
I knew my mother hadn’t made them so proabaly they were some she’d accumulated from her mother or grandmother. They were part of our family quilting heritage my daughter and I decided.
With some, we added a border…enough so they’d fit attractively in a frame…and finished one for each of my mom’s daughters and granddaughters. They could hang them in a place of their choice at their homes. (Or tuck them away in a trunk, if they preferred!)
With the half dozen or so left, we’re considering finding appropriate fabric and making a small quilt of them. This way they will be available for us to enjoy.
We are researching the approximate age of the fabrics (types of design, color, and fabric content) to see if we can truly determine who made them or at least whose era they came from.
Check out the old quilt blocks you accumulate and preserve them for your enjoyment.
