Quilting and Patchwork

The Fascination of Miniature Quilts

by Mary Emma Allen on April 27th, 2006

When I first heard of miniature quilts, I though of doll quilts, like my grandmother made for my sister’s and my dolls. However, I’ve discovered these are more than for displaying on a doll’s bed or giving a grandchild for play. Many quilters find a fascination with making these tiny pieces of art.

Generally they take the form of tiny versions of full-sized quilts that may be hung on the wall or displayed on a doll’s bed. In this way, they may vary from quilt hangings and fabric art.

On the whole, they may run from 12 x 12-inches to 20 x 20-inches, with variations in length and width.

You may find a section at a quilt show devoted to these tiny works of quilting and patchwork. Also, occasionally there are entire quilt shows with nothing but miniature quilts.
