Quilting and Patchwork

Quilting on the Mind

by Mary Emma Allen on April 25th, 2006

As my daughter, grandchildren, and I walked along the trail searching for geocaching treasure, Beth’s mind often turned to quilting. She had her digital camera along to snap photos of the children finding the hidden caches. But she also looked for designs and objects that might inspire quilt patterns.

She pointed out an interesting bark pattern on a tree and pondered how she might work it into a design. We also noticed small blue flowers with varigated green leaves. An historic covered bridge caught our attention and made a nice picture framed by trees and branches.

On our drive home over a winding country road, a moose stood at attention beside the road. Beth slowed the car, then pulled over and came to a stop as we waited for this large animal to make its decision. (Encounters between moose and autos result in many accidents in our area.) Finally it crossed the road in front of us and granddaughter snapped its picture.

It will be interesting to see how these photos will inspire quilting designs. Beth keeps a file of photos to delve into when she needs design ideas. Even when you’re involved in other activities, quilters usually find that quilting is continually on the mind.
