Rail Fence Quilts - Ideal for Beginners

by Mary Emma Allen on April 13th, 2006

After I discovered the Rail Fence Quilt pattern, I enjoyed making it for many projects, including baby quilts and placemats.  Depending on the fabrics chosen and way they’re laid out, they can make a distinct zig zag pattern across the piece.  With the placemat, it’s not so distinct, but these were popular items nevertheless and fairly quick to put together.

I made small Rail Fence quilts for both my grandchildren…aqua and yellow for Kara and green and yellow for Alex.  Both children carried them around for years.  Alex’s became so worn his mom continually patched it by appliquing trucks and trains, and animals over the holes.

A nice site, I discovered, with detailed directions for making a Rail Fence Quilt is: http://hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_needlework_other/article/ .  After reaching that page, scroll to the bottom of the second list until you find the name.  Click on it and you’ll discover instgructions for a fun project.
