Grandmother’s Flower Garden - Inspired by Spring?
One of the most intricate quilt designs, Grandmother’s Flower Garden, has been around for many, many years. It consists of numerous hexagons arranged in a series of flowers. There is one hexagon in the center, another row of six circling around it, with still one more circle of twelve hexagons around that.
These are linked together with more hexagons. Some people compare these final hexigons to a garden path weaving among the flowers.
This design, also called Honeycomb, isn’t an easy one to make. However, when it’s stitched perfectly, it makes a stunning quilt.
My husband’s grandmother created a Grandmother’s Flower Garden, sewing all the tiny pieces by hand. It does give one the inspiration of springtime highlighted by the bright colors of flowers.
Some quilters have developed quicker and easier methods of making Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilts, as evidenced in the book, Quilts from Grandmother’s Garden. The picture on the cover also gives you an idea of this unique quilt design.
