Quilting and Patchwork

Family Round Robins

by Mary Emma Allen on April 10th, 2006

The Round Robin my daughter’s quilt group is conducting gave me the thought, why not have a family Round Robin?

This could take place in several ways….only the members of an immediate family or among family members of the extended family tree.  It might be something you’d share at a family gathering or reunion.  This also is a project in which you can include children of the family.

You might involve a family theme…a sport or activity the particular family enjoys, revolve around a particular ancestor, or simply include any family related idea.

Since my daughter, granddaughter, and I all live in our multi-generational household and are involved in quiltmaking, why don’t we simply create a common piece as a starter.  We all agree upon a theme.  Then one of us select the fabric and the others add their ideas.  Since we’re only three, we might pass this among us a couple of times before we consider it finished.

Then we can start a larger piece, perhaps a small quilt that we add to in size, as well as embellishments.  Eventually we could include other family members who have an interest in quiltmaking.

There are so many ideas one could incorporate into a family Round Robin quilt or memory piece.  Why don’t you create one in your family?  I’d love to hear about it.
