Quilt Patterns Evoke Memories

by Mary Emma Allen on April 5th, 2006

In addition to fabrics that bring memories to mind, we also may find that particular patterns call to us recollections of yesteryear.  They may be ones we’ve made or stitched with a family member or were part of a favorite quilt or hanging.

These patterns also may bring to mind past events in our lives.  Whenever I see patterns of one-room schoolhouses, sometimes called the Little Red Schoolhouse, I think of the small building I attended the first four years of formal education.

In this school, painted white, not red, I was taught first by Mrs. Reynolds and then Mrs. Burr.  They were very different in teaching style and personality, but I recall favorite lessons with each of them.

The one-room school goes back even further in my heritage because my mother and her mother were teachers in these small buildings.  My mom’s two cousins also began their teaching careers in rural schools.

Now that I have taught and done substitute teaching, I marvel at these teachers who worked with so many students of different ages and learning levels…without aides, parent volunteers, or principal.

My daughter and I also incorporated a picture of a rural school in a quilt we designed and taught as a project for third graders that depicted the history of their town.

What what quilt designs do you find evoke memories of your life?  Why not write them down in a journal, along with sketches and even photographs?
