Quilting and Patchwork

Quilts Among the Amish

by Mary Emma Allen on April 4th, 2006

Some of the most popular and sought after quilts in our country consist of those designed and made by the Amish of Pennsylvania and the Mid-West.  Their bright, colorful patterns which reflect various aspects of their life make these quilts ones much in demand.

A book I added to my collection several years ago, Quilts among the Plain People by Rachel T. Pellmann and Joanne Ranck, gives much background about the Amish quilts and lives of the quiltmakers, along with insight about the designs they choose.

The authors give us some clues why people, who live simple lives bound by their religion and convictions, create such lovely quilts.  There also are directions for making a quilt.
