Creating Art With Mixed Media
Fabric art and modern quilting often incorporate mixed media, something my daughter enjoys experimenting with and which I’m beginning to find intriguing.
“What’s mixed media?” you wonder.
This is a form of art quilt which utilizes more than fabric. You might mix and match a variety of items, such as fabric, paper, felt, wood, paint and various embellishments.
Beth showed me one piece she’s working on. The base consists of a crumpled and ironed paper bag that’s highlighted with gilded paint. It’s soft enough to resemble fabric. Next she has attached a smaller piece of green fabric over which she ironed fusable webbing, then streaked with orange and red paint.
Embellisments she’s considering are gilded leaves, bits of wood, or wood buttons, and other items she finds in her collection of embellishments. Quilting will enhance the finished piece.
Two magazines Beth finds helpful for ideas about mixed media, descriptions of techniques, and suggestions for embellishments are Somerset Studio and cloth paper scissors.
