Quilting and Patchwork

Organizing a Round Robin “Quilting Bee”

by Mary Emma Allen on April 1st, 2006

When organiing a Round Robin “quilting bee,” you need participants who will complete the project in a timely fashion and follow the guidelines set down by the group or moderator.  If one quilter keeps the quilt or block at her home for several months before adding her contribution, it will drastically slow down the process and may even bring it to a halt.

Uaually the Round Robins are formed among an e-mail/online group where the quilters know one another beforehand.  Thus there is trust that each will do her part.  You also can organize a Round Robin among quilters who meet together as a local group to quilt and discuss their work.

Any expenses for mailing supplies or the quilt as it progresses should be discussed beforehand.  That way everyone knows what to expect.

If someone cannot follow through because of an emergency in their life, let the organizer know immediately so she can make other arrangements.  Everyone usually is understanding when these situations crop up.

Make sure you have the time before agreeing to participate.

Who gets the finished project, if it’s one item you all contribut to?  This should be decided and agreed upon beforehand, too. Often there is a drawing or similar method of choosing the recipient.  Perhaps you’ll be making the quilt to use as a fund raiser or donate to a special cause.

Have fun with your Round Robin projects! They remind me of the movie, “How To Make An American Quilt.” Making the wedding quilt brought these women and their stories together - round robins and quilting bees can be very special times.
