Quilting at an Early Age
Young girls helped their mothers make quilts for the family in days ago. They also stitched quilts and coverlets for their dower chests and with girl friends. Thus evolved a skill they might practice the rest of their lives.
“My Mama said when I was six-years old I had pieced blocks enough for a quilt, and I can remember sitting at her side sewing.”
One of my mom’s older cousins wrote this letter to Mother, who treasured it for years. Cousin Virgilia related here her sewing activities as a youngster and wondered if my mom was doing quilting, too.
When I began my quiltmaking business during the 1970s (the Bicentennial Years), Mother showed me this letter and seemed pleased I was carrying on a family tradition. How rewarding Mother would find it to learn that my daughter and granddaughter also are involved in quiltmaking.
Write down your family traditions in quilting and patchwork; save these memories for future generations.
