Quilt Names from Nature

by Mary Emma Allen on March 21st, 2006

Quilters receive inspiration from many places for their quilting projects.  The names also reflect their many interests.  In days ago, many of the names for traditional quilts came from nature.

In addition to star designs, mentioned in a previous post, you’ll find those suggested by the rose.  This was a favorite among the pioneer quilters and had numerous variations.  Among them were Rose of Sharon, Rose Bud, Rose Dream, Rose Cross, Rose Tree, and Tea Rose.

From the sun, quilters have drawn inspiration for their designs.  Some of the names include Setting Sun, Rising Sun, Sunshine and Shadow, Sunbean, Sun Dial, Sunflower, and Sunburst.

Even today, quilters include variations of these patterns in their work.
