Quilting Bees - A Gathering Time
Quilting bees have been with us since pioneer days. These often were social occasions when neighbors helped one another finish their quilts, as well as getting together to chat. Sometimes they worked on individual projects; other times the ladies stretched a quilt over a frame and took tiny stitches to hold front, back, and filling together.
I remember at Grandma’s house, in my childhood, gathering around the dining room table where the pieced quilt was spread out. Grandma was at one end, my aunt at the other, and a neighbor lady or two on either side.
Instead of quilting Grandma’s quilts, they tacked them with yarn or thread. But to an 8-year old, allowed to help tack and tie, this was a special occasion.
When I tack quilts nowadays, I still remember the thrill of quiltmaking when Grandma let me help her sew blocks together by hand and then attend the “tacking” bee. We were part of that line of quiltmakers from pioneer days to the present.
