Quilting and Patchwork

Combining Fabric & Paper

by Mary Emma Allen on January 24th, 2006

Quilting art has evolved into fabric art which sometimes is combined with paper art as well. The lines between the three types of art, quilting, fabric art, and paper art, have become blurred to offer us many ways to use our imaginations and talents.

For instance, if you like to create artistic collages with various papers and embellishments, try using fabric. Some artists mix the fabric and paper. Others take the paper ideas and substitute fabric, adhering fabric to a backing and stitching it with decorative threads.

Sometimes the collage designs resemble the patterns of quilts. Other times they evolve from the artist’s imagination and the fabrics and colors available. These can be adapted for quilt designs, too.

Then the traditional quilter makes bed coverings using the old patterns or those he/she has originated. The world of quiltmaking and patchwork has expanded into a much larger realm and offers the quilter and artist new worlds of creativity.

Yes, it does seem somewhat like a time warp when something I wrote more than a year ago can inspire you. Must mean our words, whether in print or online have a timeless quality.
I’m pleased you enjoyed my entry.
