The Rag Coat
In this picture book, “The Rag Coat,” by Lauren Mills, the main character, Minna, relates the story of her rag coat, or coat or many colors. Her mother’s quilting group stitched this coat of many patches when her family couldn’t afford one like the other youngsters.
At first the children at school mocked Minna and her coat because the “rags” were worn and faded. Then Minna told the stories behind the patches, many involving the children because their mothers contributed fabric and helped create the coat.
The author received inspiration from the quilters of the Appalachian region, as well as songs and stories of the people living there. “The Rag Coat,” was the result.
When I was looking for picture books depicting quilts and quiltmaking, a librarian showed me “The Rag Coat,” and said it was a favorite. Do you have any favorite books, for children or adults, that revolve around quiltmaking?I would love to hear from you - drop me an email!
