Quilting and Patchwork

Quilts in Photographs

by Mary Emma Allen on January 11th, 2006

Do you see quilts in old photographs, used as a back drop, draped over Grandma’s knees, or wrapped around a new baby and wonder where they came from and who made them? These might be in your own family pictures or in some you view in books or hanging on a wall.

As you become more involved in quilts, quiltmaking, and quilt history, quilters find themselves more aware of quilts in various settings. Quilts in photos, paintings, and posters that we once might have ignored now capture our attention.

We try to figure out the design, the date, and type of fabrics. These give us insight into the people in the photos and a bit of family heritage, if they are our ancestors or relatives.

Do you find quilts in your family photos? What do they tell you?
