Quilting and Patchwork

Hidden in Plain View - A Favorite Quilt Book

by Mary Emma Allen on December 28th, 2005

Each of us has books about quilting and patchwork that become favorites. They may be books containing information on quiltmaking itself with patterns and supply lists. Or they may be books about the history of quiltmaking and quilters. Others are novels in which quilts, quilters, and quiltmaking play a significant role.

Hidden in Plain View (A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad) is one I’ve found very interesting and informative. I’ve been intrigued by the idea that quilt designs often contained messages for travelers along the Underground Railroad. Some historians dispute this idea, while others consider it significant.

Various books, both fiction and non-fiction, have been written on this topic for children and adults. The authors of Hidden in Plain View, Jacqueline L. Tobin and Raymond G. Dobard, Ph.D, researched the subject of secrets hidden in quilts. Anyone interested in learning more about quilt secrets and this era of United States history would find their book helpful.
