Quilting and Patchwork

Writing About Quilts & Quiltmakers

by Mary Emma Allen on December 7th, 2005

“How did you get started writing about quilts?” I’m frequently asked by readers of my quilting columns and articles or my book.

Since I’m a writer by profession, as well as a quiltmaker, it seemed natural to combine the two. I first began mentioning quilts and other patchwork items in my weekly newspaper column, “Country Kitchen.” From there, I decided to find other outlets for my writing about this topic.

As I became involved in a home-based quiltmaking business, I approached a magazine about writing on the business aspect. This lasted for eight years, until the magazine was discontinued. However, this venture opened the door for interviewing quiltmakers and writing about them for the magazine.

Then the idea for a book evolved and The Magic of Patchwork resulted.

In future blogs, I’ll give tips for writing about your quilting endeavors, as well as teaching workshops on quiltmaking and quilt history. I’ve found that sewing, writing and teaching have all bonded together into a fascinating career.
