Guiding Stars - a Book of Quilters’ Favorite Quotations

by Mary Emma Allen on November 26th, 2005

As a writer, as well as quilter, I find it enjoyable for my work to appear in anthologies. When these are books for quilters and quilt enthusiasts, it’s especially neat.

Several years ago I interviewed Elaine Miles, publisher of several quilt books. These included journals, birthday book, reprints from old books, and books of quilters’ quotations. When Elaine began contacting quilters for input for Guiding Stars, A Sampler of Quilters’ Favorite Quotations, she asked me to participate.

Quilters, writers, and quilt artists let her know their favorite inspirational quotes drawn from the Bible, poetry, family stories, famous people, songs, speeches, letters, and books.. As Elaine said in her Introduction: “The words have come from quilters, but the messages are universal, addressing the traveler in all of us.”

In addition to providing a favorite quote or two, the quilter could include her own quote in her short bio piece in the back. Mine was: “Quiltmaking is one of those arts which forms a common bond among quiltmakers around the world and, once in the blood, is an activity a quilter can never give up.”

How true…although I no longer operate the quiltmaking business from my home as I did when Elaine edited and published this book, I find myself drawn to quilts and quiltmaking again and again.

If you’re ever asked to participate in quilt book projects and anthologies, consider it.

(I checked and copies of Guiding Stars are available at Amazon.com. This book of 650 quuotations is paperback with star design on the cover and back.)
