Quilting and Patchwork

Save Your Scraps

by Mary Emma Allen on November 17th, 2005

My daughter pulled out several bags of fabric scraps for her latest project. These were simply strips and small pieces left after cutting out other projects.

“What are you making?” I asked.

“Background for a hanging,” was the reply.

Then I watched as she laid out strips of various colors and designs to form a background.
When she has them in the design or order she desires, she’ll fuse them to the backing. Next she’ll appliqué them, using a variety of stitches.

With this in place, she has many options for finishing. Appliquing scenes against it; sewing beading to enhance either the scenes of a random design. If you’re into fabric postcards, you can fuse strips on a backing cut to size. Or you can cut the larger fused piece into postcard size.

This is just one way to use your fabric scraps. What do you do?
