Quilting and Patchwork

Keeping a Quilting Sketch Book

by Mary Emma Allen on October 18th, 2005

Quilters often record their ideas in sketch books. Whether these ideas come from nature and the out-of-doors, patterns in the sand, snow drifts, clouds in the sky, birds, animals, unusual color combinations, reflections in the water, the knot of a tree, and other natural or manmade objects, they’re utilized by quilters in their sketches.

Here the quilter can doodle, try different ideas. She may paste photos and pictures to help her in her creativity. My daughter has hers close at hand and plays with ideas while she’s watching TV, riding in a car, waiting in a doctor’s or dentist’s office.

Start your own sketch book….paste in it scenes in nature and your life that bring quilting designs to mind. Some you may never use; others will become fascinating works of art in your quilting career.
