Turning Autumn Leaves into Quilts

by Mary Emma Allen on September 20th, 2005

One of my daughter’s favorite subjects for her quilt hangings seems to be leaves, usually the colorful ones of our New Hampshire trees. When I was making quilts to sell through craft shops, I often found myself gravitating to the autumn colors for my designs, even when the patterns weren’t of leaves.

Beth creates with leaves in various ways, sometimes utilizing her hand dyed and painted fabrics, other times incorporating those with leaf designs already printed on them. One of her prize-winning hangings gives a three-dimensional effect with separate leaves attached across the hanging.

Another of her pieces consists of small squares with a leaf in each. The variety of stitches, different for each leaf, contributes to its fascination for the viewer. In yet another, netting over fabric leaves adds interest.

As you look around you at the natural beauty of autumn, you, too, may find inspiration in the colorful leaves that abound.
