Stitching Fabric Postcards in my Travels

by Mary Emma Allen on September 1st, 2005

“What are you working on?” a flight attendant asked, as I stitched the fabric postcard during a flight.

When I explained this small piece of art and mentioned that my daughter had introduced me to this new art form in our lives, she remarked she found it so interesting.

This particular card I’m creating is very simple, made of a single piece of fabric, cut to the size of a postcard. I’ve basted it to a piece of heavy pellon and am outlining the lines of the design with various colored threads and fancy stitches. Occasionally I make French knots for emphasis.

The fabric an Oriental design with flecks of gold midst black, red, lavender, blue, and green. The pattern contains fans, flowers, and leaves. On one corner I’ve stitched a “frog” (the type used for closures on Oriental clothing). I think that’s what really caught the flight attendant’s eye.
