Quilters Make Quilts for Hurricane Victims

by Mary Emma Allen on September 1st, 2005

Just as quilters have during other castastrophes, they are bonding together to make and send quilts and blankets to centers, particularly at the Astrodome in Houston, TX, where flood refugees are gathered after Hurricane Katrina. This project, organized by Karey Patterson Bresenhan (Director of the International Quilt Festival – Houston & Chicago) with the Red Cross, is called Quilters Comfort America, a cooperative project to comfort victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Perhaps you have extra fabric you haven’t found a use for yet. Now may be the time to make a baby’s quilt, a lap quilt for an elderly person, or a twin bed size quilt. (They’d prefer the quilts no smaller than baby’s quilt size.)

If you don’t have quilts made ahead, it doesn’t take long to stitch up a crib quilt or blanket. They’re also asking for donations of sheets and blankets.

Check out this site for information about quilt donations, preferred sizes, and where to send them: www.quilts.com/hurricane.htm
