Easy-To-Make Bandana Quilt
An attractive, eye-catching, easy-to-make quilt consists red and blue bandanas, those large pieces of fabric my farmer father and hired man used as handkerchiefs when I was a child. Nowadays you may find fabric with a bandana type design. Or purchase some of the bandanas themselves.
Pre-shrink the bandanas, as you would any quilting fabric. Then lay out the colors in a design you prefer. You can use all of one red design and one blue design. Or you may purchase several designs in the two colors.
Stitch the bandanas, with right sides together, using a ¼-inch seam allowance. When you have them pieced in your desired design and size (adding bandanas until of the size you want), press them. Then youre ready to add batting and backing in the usual manner.
You can cut the backing larger than the top, folding the sides up over the top to make a hem. Or you can use an individual binding.
If you purchase bandana printed fabric, sew the squares together as you do the handkerchiefs.
Either tie the top, batting, and backing together or machine or hand quilt it. The design of the bandana often will suggest a design for quilting.
Sometimes youll find bandana fabric and bandanas in colors other than red and blue. These make interesting quilts and hangings as well.
