Patchwork, Patchwork Everywhere
Once you become involved in quiltmaking and patchwork, you begin to see these designs everywhere and realize that the art isnt relegated solely to quilts. Patchwork may be found in fabric items such as quilts, hangings, clothing, household items. However, you will see patchwork in stationery, paper crafts, wood inlay, oil and watercolor paintings.
As I sit at my desk, Im looking at a framed picture made by a cousin. The focal point is a patchwork heart, stitched by hand and attached to a cardstock backing. Around this is penned a saying about families. A contrasting mat surrounds it, then the picture frame.
My daughter made me a lovely pin made by creating a patchwork heart. To this she sewed a back for pinning the heart to my jacket. Ive received many compliments on this work of art. She also made pins using the Dresden Plate design.
When I wrote my monthly magazine column, I interviewed a couple who made wall hangings out of wood, cut and painted in quilt patterns. Their booth was a very popular one at the quilt show where I met them.
For stationery, you can take photos of your quilts and hangings, then print them on cardstock. Or you can create designs using paints or colored pencils. These can be scanned and printed for cards and postcards.
These are just a few ideas for utilizing patchwork designs in places other than quilts. Look around you and youll soon see patchwork everywhere!
