Quilting and Patchwork

Post Card Quilts

by Mary Emma Allen on July 27th, 2005

My daughter recently introduced me to the fascinating world of post card quilts. Yes, quilters send patchwork and appliqué the size of a postcard through the mail.

Postal Shared Art it’s sometimes called because all along the route of the post card, throughout this country and abroad, those who handle it see the card and enjoy it.

These tiny art pieces are fairly new, but a great way to try out new ideas and techniques, my daughter says. They aren’t time consuming, so you can finish a project rather quickly, depending on whether you do it entirely by hand or use the sewing machine.

The cards made of fabric on a stiff backing and may have beads and sequins attached. Surprisingly, they usually go through the mail without damage.

Generally it costs 37 cents within the United States to send these pieces of art, more when sending to other countries. Quilters often form exchange groups and mail the cards to one another.

My daughter is making a wall hanging by attaching a number of the cards to a backing. You also can place them within picture frames, individually or in a group.

I’ve begun working on some post card quilts of my own and find it such fun. Have you tried this yet?
