Quilt/Patchwork Businesses
Often quilters ask me how they can turn their hobby into an income producing venture. I wrote The Business of Patchwork for eight years and Work Patch for another two years for quilting magazines. These were based upon my experiences operating a quilting business and interviews with other quilters.
Quilting and patchwork related businesses are many. Over the course of the ten years I wrote these quilt business columns, I discovered numerous ways quilters earned an income, whether full time or parttime, from patchwork/quiltmaking and the many spin-offs. I continue to be amazed at the new avenues opening up for quiltmakers today, especially with the use of computers and the Internet.
Often we think of quilt/patchwork businesses as those connected with making and selling quilts and hangings. However, quilting related businesses can encompass teaching classes online and in person, designing note cards, engaging in quilt photography, creating quilted clothing (I made quilted and appliquéd vests for children for several years), developing a traveling quilt trunk, appraising quilts, operating a fabric shop, doing quilt collage, writing about quilting and patchwork, plus others.
Ill go into these more in detail in future blogs. However, these are a few ideas you can brainstorm.
(Im updating my quilt business experiences as well as contacting other quilters and compiling the information into a book. )
