Quilting and Tragedies

by Mary Emma Allen on July 11th, 2005

Quilting has been an art through the ages women have turned to during times of trouble and tragedy, as well as times of happiness. Woven into the designs of their quilts and midst the fabrics, we often discover the stories of events in their lives that tell of joy and sorrow.

These may be family, community, and world events. The bombings in London likely will cause quilters to put their feelings into their fabrics, and through their fingers tell of their grief, compassion, and sympathy for families affected by this event.

This happened with the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. Many, many memorial quilts have resulted. If you type “9/11 quilts” into a search engine, you’ll come up with links to many web sites and pictures of quilts made to remember this time in our lives and our history.

Some quilts, resulting from tragedy, will be viewed only by family members, others by an organization or community, while some will be seen by the world…either at displays or on web sites.

No matter who makes them or who sees them, these quilts represent the feelings of quiltmakers as they seek comfort and try to comfort others, while bringing renewed hope to the world through their art midst tragedy.
