Families Quilting - A Treasured Tradition

by Mary Emma Allen on June 15th, 2005

What fun to see my daughter and granddaughter working on quilting projects. It reminds me of the quilting gatherings my mom told me about, sitting beside her mother and relatives when she was a little girl.

Then there were the times I sat with my grandmother in her farmhouse kitchen. I helped her sew quilt blocks together for quilts she made my siblings and me. Her gift one Christmas was a quilt for each of us. On one corner of each, she embroidered our initials. That’s how I know the quilt my mom saved for years was mine. The initials MEP (my maiden name) were still visible on one corner.

Now that my daughter is into quilt designing and my granddaughter is following suit, I find it exciting that they’re carrying on this family quilting heritage, I call The Trails End Quilters. That’s where it started…at Trails End Farm, in Milan, New York.

My grandmother started me out with simple quilts of sewing blocks together. We tied them instead of hand quilting. I recommend starting out with simple quilts for youngsters and adult beginners and undertaking a project that can be completed rather quickly. Then when the thrill of success is high, venture into more complicated items.

What projects are you making as a family as you develop a treasured tradition?
