Searching for Quilt Fabrics
Searching for specific old fabrics can be fun and frustrating. The quilt my mom received as a wedding gift has many worn places. Id like to find some old or reproduction fabrics to match the ones originally used.
I carry small pieces fabrics with me when my husband and I travel on business trips. So far I havent found the fabrics Im searching for.
Its a bit like genealogy research. I keep snippets of data in my notebook or planner and look for those ancestors when Im near an area where they might have lived.
Searching for family history through quilts makes these old ones especially interesting.
Questions arise as we ponder the origins of the fabrics.
*Were these new fabrics or ones from clothing a family member wore?
*Did the fabric come from printed feed sacks or some other use?
*Why did the quiltmaker choose these fabrics? Did they have special meaning or simply were some she had on hand?
*What caused her to use that particular pattern?
As we ponder these questions and more, all kinds of stories come to mind that add interest and possible history to a quilt while we search for fabrics for repairing it.
