Quilting and Patchwork

Quilts & Other Projects of Denim

by Mary Emma Allen on June 4th, 2005

Making quilts with “found” fabrics (or essentially recycling old clothes) makes a connection with the quilter of old. The early American quilters often didn’t have money for new fabric or didn’t have access to a store that carried calico, gingham, and other fabrics. So they used (or ”recycled” in modern terms) old clothing for their quilts.

Denim is a great fabric for quilted and patchwork projects, my daughter has found. She used old jeans, skirts, and dresses of this material, not new denim fabrics.

“You must make me one of those tote bags,” commented her friend Debbie upon seeing the ones Beth created for me and her daughter.

Denim also makes interesting quilts of various sizes. Because of its weght, some quilters don’t even fill a denim quilt with batting. Instead they simply back it. Either way, demin makes great quilts for kids, a throw for a couch, a blanket for placing baby on the floor, or an ideal picnic blanket.

Your denim projects can be many and varied. What have you created with old denim.
