Quilting As Therapy
Quilters find quiltmaking and patchwork a great way to relax, relieve stress, take their mind off problems and worries as they lose themselves in their projects. My daughter discovered this to be so when there was serious illness in her family.
Small quilting projects were ideal when she had to wait in doctors waiting rooms, sit with a family member in the hospital, then care for them at home. Her interest in quiltmaking was renewed (shed been around my quiltmaking for years as she was growing up).
From those small projects larger, more complicated ones evolved. Her interest in dying fabrics, using beadwork, venturing into quilted scenes developed into prize winning wall hangings.
She found that working on her quilting projects, whether large or small hangings, collages, fabric books and quilted postcards, has become a great therapy whenever shes stressed. The friendship of other quilters, online and off, also gives quilters an outlet and someone who understands their obsessions with fabric, color, and design.
When life seems about to overcome you, why not gather some fabric around you, pull out your design pad, then lose yourself in the wonderful world of quilting and forget worries for awhile.
Share with us, too, how quilting has changed your life.
