Quilting and Patchwork

My Quilting World Opened in 1975

by Mary Emma Allen on May 19th, 2005

Are there specific times in our lives when we have more time for quilting than others? My time to begin again was during the Bicentennial years of the 1970s.

After quilting with my grandmother when I was eight years old, I’d pursued other phases my life…school, college, marriage, motherhood. Then during the Bicentennial Years, I became involved in quilting once more.

I’d been operating a dressmaking business from my home when my mom, who kept a small country general store, asked me to help with the quilt orders America’s 200-year celebration had brought about. The lady who was making quilts for Mother’s customers couldn’t keep up with the orders.

“You have lots of scraps from your dressmaking,” Mother commented. “Why don’t you use them for quilt?”

My life took a new turn and the world of quiltmaking, quilt history, and a quilting heritage opened up for me. So I began making quilts, pillows, placemats, patchwork clothing and my business called, MEA’s Quilts, began.

(How did your involvement in quilting and patchwork begin? I’d enjoy hearing about your experience.)

I have never made a large quilt but have done a few small patchwork projects. The very first exposure I had with quilting didn’t even involve piecing! I have loved sewing since I was a grade schooler and when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, my mom bought a piece of fabric with pre-printed sunbonnet sues on them and quilting lines. She put it together with batting and a backing fabric, got a big quilting hoop, and let me work away at it. I must have spent hours working away on my quilting stitches. I still have the quilt but haven’t put the edge on yet. If I ever have a girl, I’ll finish it up and let her use it. :)

    Hello Lei,
Thanks for sharing the story about your first quilting. That’s a great way to have youngsters begin…using one of the many printed fabrics and quilting around the lines.
Nowadays so many quilters are working on small patchwork and applique projects. These can be finished more quickly so we don’t become overwhelmed and discouraged. Also, this gives us a chance to try different techniques.
